Lecture
I gave my first lecture to 40 new Investigating Officers. They are not fresh graduates. Quite a number of them are senior officers. Very reluctant to do it but my boss told my supervisor to give me a slot " Give her the exposure". I was nervous a day before but refuse to show it in front of my supervisor. The title was "Recording Witness Statement". After we prepared the slides, I was told to select my topic. So I chose the last topic, "Chronological Order & Documentary Evidence". Tummy didn't feel good that morning...hmm good excuse to escape but I thought...I've done several presentation to DG, spoke during MC & FSC, went through a difficult judge before. But what if people sleep, yawn or leave the hall while I give my lecture. I knew I had to try this...such opportunity won't appear everyday. My supervisor started the lecture...surprised, he's really good. He's even able to make the audience laugh (actual fact is he's not a funny guy at all). Came to my turn...decided not to look at my lecture notes but instead illustrates my points with real cases, mistakes and our experience in court with difficult witness. People responded by asking questions...yes!. After the lecture my supervisor said " I knew I don't have to worry when you pick the most important topic in the lecture...you did very well". I'm so blessed with the opportunity given to me. Last year with Faizal training me on MC presentation and this year, my boss has given me an opportunity to give a public lecture. Just don't care about moderation this year. I know that I'm happy with my career progression so far.Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Job.Fever.Critics.Love
The Job
Do I like my job? Yes I love presentation. I love to deal with the public. But at the same time having to face judges who might just scold you in front of other lawyers and the public. Yes there are days you just feel and hope that one of the parties would be on MC (the accused, the judge or the defence) as your body & mind were not up to it. Especially one whole week of trial (full day) without any break...you just have to force yourself to be focus...focus to what the judge say, witnesses answers, cross examination by the defence and how to repair the case immediately...can't afford to make mistakes and at the same time you are facing the public especially if the press are around. But by end of the day, especially this week where I don't have to go to court, sitting at my desk, perusing the investigation paper...I just realise how much I love conducting trial. The thrill, surprises and especially sometimes in the morning the court might not be with you but by evening we would usually end the day with a high note. Like my supervisor, Anthony always said " Trial is all about enjoying the ride." People might think that the job is about winning. I used to think that too. But I find that you won't be focus if you think is all about winning. Being in the prosecution is about achieving justice. We just have to work honestly and do our best. The judge will decide. Judges are humans as well. There is a famous saying "For man proposes, but God disposes, neither is the way of man in his own hands".
Fever
After I recovered from my fever, 3 days later...Din & Maiqel were down with fever. The word was "Panic" with the H1N1 flu going on. Even had an argument with Din that morning.
Wifey: Badan you panas ni...you have to go to hospital
Hubby: I got it from you. Is notH1N1
Wifey: You never know
Hubby: Nanti i have to be quarantine...macam mana.
Wifey: You don't know yet apa...Maiqel is having fever as well.
SMS Sab, informing her that I won't be able to make it for her reception at Cyberview (sob...sob...). We went to Pantai Hospital Emergency and the place was packed than usual. I've been to the emergency several times as Maiqel somehow love to pick Saturday or Sunday as his sick day & I'll be depressed as I prefer him to see the specialist (only available during weekdays)compared to the MO. Yeah call me a kiasu mother.
Nervous with the crowd. I decided that both boys would be better off waiting at the compound. We had to wait for 2 hours before we could enter the emergency ward & another 1/2 hour for the doctor. I don't blame the hospital. Busy day for them. Felt sorry with nurses and admin. assistants. There were in risky position and at the same time had to deal with public dissatisfaction. One mat salleh lady scolded the girl at the front desk "How long must we wait!" and her son added on " I told you to go to another hospital (Do you know that you have to wait for 6 hours in other hospitals). The girl didn't even raise her voice and replied politely "Sorry madam, we are trying our best. As you can see there are many patients here". I gave her a smile and said "nasib baik pakai mask, boleh sembunyi perasaankan" She laughed. Glad at least she knows that there are other people who understand their position.
It was a hard time for me. Could not sleep as I have to monitor their temperature & at the same time thinking about the submission that I have to prepare as we have to submit to Sg. Petani Court in 2 days time. Glad both boys recovered 2 days later.
Critics
People say that you need to be in the right state of mind when you cook. I love to cook and I enjoy it when others appreciate it. We had pot luck last Saturday at our Bukit Jelutong house. But somehow my cooking was abit off that day. Asked Hubby " How was the food?" replied "Ok, but abit weak" (Din's polite way of saying ..tak sedap sangat). There were some leftover so I brought it to my mum's. On Monday she called "Eh, how come your sweet sour tak sedap, next time mak masaklah". There goes my "Dutch Uncle" mum. I wasn't busy that day but maybe less focus. But whatever it is the highlight of the moment was to hang out with the girls. Just like you Zeti, I feel so lucky to have such good friends!
Love
Dating Din was fun. He's just interesting to be with. After marriage, things seems to be different. We used to be this crazy couple who drove to Genting at 1 am to eat nasi lemak & rush back to catch 8.30 am lecture. Now both became serious in our job, preoccupied with Maiqel and I just realised that we hardly have a proper conversation. One morning, both of us with our black & white attire as I have a case in KL and his case was in PJ, Hubby asked "So, who is your witness today" replied "Banker". He continued "Banker...usually what are the cross examinations?" (Hmm...I thought he should know better...former DPP and now a Defence Counsel). So I told him some of the common questions asked by the Defence. Then he said "Lagi?". Curious " Eh, you have to cross banker yer kat court today?" Hubby responded "Nolah, I nak buat conversation dengan my wife". I guess he realise it as well.
